Purple Still , 2020.

Soft Sculpture: Wool, Silk, Metal, Paper. (7 1/2 x 8 x 8 inch)

Inspired by Remedios Varo’s painting (oil on canvas) Still Life Reviving (1963), Purple Still refers to the low senses (feminine senses), in a surrealist form. This work implies the mystic properties of the daily rituals and womanhood (female alchemist). In contradiction to Varo’s work format (painting), that primary engages the sense of sight, Purple Still engages the low sense of touch and taste, yet refers to the themes addressed by Varo. This artwork celebrates life, the creative force, the low senses, the feminine divine and aims to critic the place of females within the institutional frame.

Techniques Used: Soft Sculpture, needle paint embroidery, coiling and natural dying (logwood).

The Heart Shaped box , 2020.

Soft Sculpture Installation, Text and Soundscape (1:24)

Wool, Silk, Leather, Metal, Gold (24K). (47 1/2 x 7 1/2 x 7 1/2 inch)

Soundscape Text, Narration, and Art Direction: Cinthya Chalifoux

Inspired by Sigmund Freud’s Theory of the Unconscious Mind, The Heart Shaped box, explores the very intimate state of the pain related to part from a significative person. Attached to this mental and physical state, we float within our feelings for a moment in time. The memories of the loved one create a resistance, and a pain (physical and emotional) that stops us from moving forward. The sum of those moments is boxed, and it lives within us.

This artwork and its soundscape, expresses the inner-monologue activated by pain in euphonic form and addresses the physical take-over that happens when the body wants to protect what our minds are not able to control. This tension is palpable, it is a living process of its own that is connected to our mind, heart, soul and body. In relation o the artwork, the poem, presented in an audio format, sought to immerse its audience and facilitate a sensorial kinaesthetic connection to the emotional memory. The Heart Shaped Box aims to question ideologies of health (physical and mental), acceptance, resilience, balance, inner strength and identity.

The audio soundscape is subjected to copyrights.

Techniques Used: Stumpwork, gold work embroidery, braiding, wrapping, hand sewing.
